Sedation Dentistry: Relaxing, Anxiety-Free Care

Don't let fear keep you from the dental care you deserve. Our sedation options help you relax completely for a stress-free experience.

Understanding Sedation

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It's sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry," although that's not entirely accurate since most patients remain awake with the exception of those under general anesthesia.

The levels of sedation used include minimal sedation (you are awake but relaxed), moderate sedation (you may slur your words and not remember much of the procedure), deep sedation (you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened), and general anesthesia (you are completely unconscious).

At Tysons Dental Associates, we offer multiple sedation options to meet your specific needs and comfort level. Our team is certified by the State of Virginia to perform conscious sedation, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout your visit.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. Our doctors are certified by the State of Virginia to perform conscious sedation. We carefully review your medical history, monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure, and follow strict safety protocols.

Will I be completely unconscious?

It depends on the type of sedation. With nitrous oxide, you'll be relaxed but fully aware. Oral sedation puts you in a twilight state where you're awake but very relaxed. IV sedation creates a sleep-like state, though you can still respond to verbal cues. None of these are general anesthesia.

How long does the sedation last?

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after the mask is removed. Oral sedation effects can last several hours, so you'll need someone to drive you home and should rest for the remainder of the day. IV sedation effects also last several hours and require the same precautions.

Can I eat before my sedation appointment?

For nitrous oxide, you can eat normally. For oral and IV sedation, we typically recommend not eating for 6-8 hours before your appointment. We'll provide specific instructions when you schedule your procedure.

Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Some plans cover sedation for certain procedures or for patients with documented dental anxiety. We'll help you understand your coverage and discuss payment options during your consultation.
