Bone Grafting
Restore the bone mass needed to successfully place and support dental implants — even after significant bone loss.
Rebuilding the Foundation for Your Implants
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that restores lost jaw bone, creating a solid foundation for dental implants. At our Tysons Corner, VA office, Dr. Alex Osinovsky performs bone grafts using advanced techniques and Cone Beam 3D imaging for precise treatment planning.
Bone loss can occur due to tooth extraction, gum disease, infection, or trauma. If you've been missing teeth for an extended period, the bone in that area may have diminished significantly. A bone graft rebuilds this lost structure, making implant placement possible.
Patients throughout Northern Virginia — including Vienna, McLean, Falls Church, and Fairfax — choose our Tysons VA location for bone grafting because we combine surgical expertise with compassionate care for optimal outcomes.
Are You a Candidate?
You may need a bone graft if you have:
- Insufficient bone for dental implants
- Bone loss from tooth extraction
- Bone deterioration from gum disease
- Trauma or injury to the jaw
- Been missing teeth for an extended period
During your consultation at our Tysons Corner office, we'll use 3D imaging to evaluate your bone structure and determine the best grafting approach.
Types of Bone Graft Sources
Autograft (Autologous)
Bone taken from the patient — typically from the chin or the iliac crest of the pelvis. This type has the lowest risk of rejection since the bone is your own, though it does require an additional surgical site.
Allograft
Bone sourced from another person or a certified bone bank. Allograft bone can be fresh, fresh-frozen, or freeze-dried, and eliminates the need for a second surgical site on the patient.
Alloplastic (Artificial)
Synthetic graft substitutes made from ceramics or naturally occurring minerals. Biological and mineral additives can help minimize the risk of infection and rejection.
Xenograft
Bone derived from animals — typically bovine (cow) — that has been specially treated and sterilized for safe use in humans.

Common Questions
Why might I need a bone graft?
Bone loss in the jaw can occur due to tooth loss, infections, abscesses, gum disease, or trauma. If you have been missing teeth for an extended period, the bone in that area may have diminished to the point where it can no longer support a dental implant. A bone graft restores that mass.
How long does bone graft healing take?
The grafted bone typically needs several months to integrate and mature before implants can be placed. Healing time varies depending on the size of the graft and your individual biology. We monitor your progress with Cone Beam 3D imaging.
Is a bone graft painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation options available. Post-operative discomfort is manageable with prescribed medication and typically resolves within a few days to a week.
What are the two types of bone graft surgery?
In one type, there is enough bone for the implant but additional bone is needed at the sides to fully cover it. In the other, there is not enough bone at all and a larger graft is required before implant placement can proceed.
Will my body reject the graft?
Rejection is rare. The type of graft material is carefully selected based on your health history and needs. Autografts (your own bone) carry the least rejection risk. Our team will recommend the best option during your consultation.
