Common Emergencies

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Quick action can save your tooth. Here's how to handle common emergencies before you reach us.

Severe Toothache

Intense, persistent tooth pain that may indicate infection, abscess, or nerve damage requiring immediate attention.

What to do: Rinse with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief. Call us immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A tooth that has been completely dislodged from its socket due to trauma or injury.

What to do: Handle by crown only. Rinse gently. Store in milk or saliva. See us within 30 minutes for best results.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Teeth that have chipped, fractured, or cracked due to injury, biting hard objects, or decay.

What to do: Rinse mouth with warm water. Apply cold compress. Save any pieces. Call for same-day appointment.

Lost Filling or Crown

A filling or crown that has fallen out, leaving the tooth exposed and sensitive.

What to do: Keep the crown if found. Use dental cement or sugar-free gum temporarily. See us within 24-48 hours.

Dental Abscess

A painful, pus-filled infection at the root of a tooth or in the gums that requires urgent treatment.

What to do: Do not ignore swelling. Rinse with salt water. Seek immediate care - infections can spread.

Bleeding Gums or Mouth

Excessive or prolonged bleeding from gums, tongue, or mouth that won't stop with pressure.

What to do: Apply pressure with gauze. If bleeding continues after 15 minutes, call us or visit ER.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes severe tooth pain, knocked-out teeth, broken or cracked teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses, excessive bleeding, and injuries to the soft tissues of your mouth. If you're experiencing significant pain or have had dental trauma, call us immediately at (703) 848-8906. We reserve same-day appointments for emergencies at our Tysons Corner office.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Time is critical - you have about 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If you can't reinsert it, store it in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation kit. Call us immediately and get to our office as quickly as possible.

How do I know if my toothache is an emergency?

Seek emergency care if you have severe, persistent pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter pain relievers, swelling in your face or gums, fever, a bad taste in your mouth (possible infection), or difficulty swallowing or breathing. These could indicate an abscess or serious infection that requires immediate treatment.

Can I go to the emergency room for a dental emergency?

ERs can provide pain relief and antibiotics for infections, but they typically cannot perform dental procedures like root canals, extractions, or repairs. For most dental emergencies, you'll get faster, more appropriate care at our dental office. However, if you have severe swelling affecting your breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or facial trauma with possible fractures, go to the ER first.

What if I have a dental emergency after hours?

Call our office at (703) 848-8906 and leave a message on our emergency line. Dr. Osinovsky personally checks messages and will return your call as soon as possible. For severe emergencies outside office hours, we'll do our best to provide guidance or arrange an emergency visit. For life-threatening situations, always call 911.

How much does emergency dental care cost?

Emergency exam fees vary based on the treatment needed. We provide transparent pricing during your visit. Many dental insurance plans cover emergency care, and we accept most major insurance. For uninsured patients or additional costs, we offer flexible payment options through CareCredit. Don't let cost concerns delay emergency treatment - untreated emergencies often become more expensive to fix.

What should I do for a broken tooth before I can see the dentist?

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze. Save any broken pieces if possible. Avoid chewing on that side and stick to soft foods. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed and call us for a same-day appointment.

Can a lost filling or crown wait until regular business hours?

While not as urgent as severe pain or trauma, a lost filling or crown should be addressed within 24-48 hours to prevent further damage or infection. In the meantime, you can use dental cement or sugar-free gum to temporarily cover the exposed area. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean. If you have significant pain or sensitivity, call us for a same-day appointment.
